The Easy Fall Dress Guide

Yesterday, I threw on this Faherty dress and had an immediate “wow, this is easy” moment. No agonizing over pant styles (straight? wide-leg? skinny?), no exhausting hunt for a matching top (slim or flowy? blouse or sweater?), and zero guilt about spending another day in workout gear. Dresses are an easy way to get “dressed” and a little upgrade from running around in leggings or jeans.

Note: If the shorter dresses look too short, don’t despair—the models are ten feet tall and make them look really short! To make sure a dress is long enough for you, take one of your favorite length dresses, measure from the shoulder seam to the hem, then check the length detail in the item description to see if it will work for you.

Another note: If the dress is short-sleeved, don’t be afraid to wear a long-sleeved tee underneath when it gets cold. Our favorite tee for this is the cotton tee from Cos—it is super thin, has long arms with thumb holes, and is the perfect layering piece. We have it in all the colors and wear it under dresses, sweaters, etc.

Some of our favorite dresses this season include:

Madewell Denim Dress: This easy, popover mini dress features a classic polo collar, hidden button placket, and side-seam pockets. Throw it on for a casual, yet put-together look.

Ralph Lauren Chambray Tie Waist Shirtdress: Another denim winner you’ll have in your wardrobe for years. This long-sleeve shirtdress features a self-tie belt and a flared skirt. Precise paneling through the bodice and skirt enhances the silhouette.

Brochu Walker Havana Dress: This dress comes in 20 colors for a reason! It’s a universally flattering cut you can wear casually or dressed up. The materials are beautiful, and it will be a staple in your closet for years to come.

Faux Suede Swing Dress: Love the green color. One and done for fall.

Melissa Nepton Brielle Dress: I (Chrissie) have this dress, and it’s so easy to throw on and feel put together. The first time I wore it, I got more compliments on it than anything I’ve worn in months (the “can I look and see the tag on that dress” and “where did you get it” type of comments). I’ve worn it with Birkenstocks while running errands, and with nicer shoes to a fancy luncheon.

Madewell Tucked Long Sleeve Dress: The subtle tucks at the waist create a flattering fit. Throw a sweater over your shoulders (or wear it over the dress) and you’re good to go.

Cos Merino Wool Polo Dress: We are loving polo sweaters this season, and this long-sleeved polo dress is knitted from soft merino wool and designed with a tonal collar that frames the ribbed V-neck. Pair with tights and boots when it gets colder.

Marine Layer Willow Dot Maxi Dress: Classic polka dots add perfect charm to this soft cotton-blend maxi dress with billowy sleeves. This would look cute with tennis shoes and a sweater on top.

Boden Rhoda Cord Dress: Another easy throw-on, button-up dress made from our favorite corduroy, and available in 5 colors including leopard! Fitted panels, full sleeves, and an angled waist add shape. Again, cute with sneakers, loafers, or boots.
