Holi-Day, Holi-Night: Around-the-Clock Holiday Style

We’ve spent some time going through our closets and seeing if we have any holiday clothes that work for us this year. And in doing this and looking at our calendars, we realize we need two different outfits—one for coffees, lunches, and other daytime holiday activities, and another for dressier nighttime events. If you have one (or two) choices for each, you’ll be prepared for Holiday 2025. Of course, the dressiness of the activity will dictate what to wear, and some daytime items can be worn at night, depending on the event. Here are some ideas to help you get dressed this holiday season.

Daytime:

Pants:

Opt for a festive-colored pant here—red, wine/burgundy, or green —and top with a simple turtleneck like this one from Quince. Accessories are key – a great belt, bag, and boots.

The column of color is a great look. Wine pants with a matching top, red pants with a red blouse, or black velvet pants with a black bow sweater.

And don’t be afraid to wear a fun checked pant – a mod one like this from Boden, or a more traditional holiday check is also chic. Pair with a matching turtleneck or crisp white blouse with a twist (with a sweater thrown over your shoulders).

Dresses:

A knit dress is always a good choice, like this maroon dress with red accent trim or this plaid one. If knit isn’t your thing, this red crepe dress is one of our favorites.

Nighttime/Dressier Events:

Dressier holiday dressing can be fun! A little velvet, throw in some sparkle, and out the door you go. Note: if you buy one great holiday outfit – like a red taffeta skirt or a holiday plaid skirt/dress, you can wear it year after year after year, so you only need to make this decision once, and it pays itself forward!

Suits:

A velvet suit is a chic way to do the holidays.

Invest in a fun holiday skirt and wear it year after year, like black taffeta, a festive red ball skirt, or checkered holiday skirt.

The benefit of a dress is one and done—no separates, easy to throw on and go. Try winter white, velvet, or sequin.

Party Pants:

Nothing says ready to party like a fun pair of party pants. Sequin from J. McLaughlin or a festive pattern from La Double J is always a good idea.
