Jones Road Beauty Round-Up

Do you remember when Bobbi Brown makeup launched? It was 1991, and it was a game-changer for those of us who didn’t like or wear make-up because it made us look fake and too made-up. The line launched with 10 brown based lipsticks that celebrated natural beauty, and we hopped on this natural beauty bandwagon. Bobbi grew the brand and sold it to Estee Lauder in 1995, after just four years. She stayed on for another 21 years until she stepped away to work on building something better, launching Jones Road Beauty in 2020 (at the age of 62, when her Estee Lauder non-compete had expired).

Bobbi created Jones Road Beauty with the intent of offering clean, high-performance, easy-to-use beauty products that work on every skin type and tone. Its tagline is ‘clean no-makeup makeup’. The products are also designed with mature skin in mind. We’re fans of the brand because it’s easy to use and offers a color palette that suits a 50+ woman who wants to look naturally good, not made up.

You can find Jones Road at one of its nine stores, at Liberty London, and online. We’ve both visited the store in Greenwich Village in NYC and loved trying and buying the products. Jo and her sister had complete makeovers last year at the Greenwich Village store – call ahead if you’d like to do this! We highly recommend it.

Here are some of our favorite items, all of which we use:

Miracle Balm: This balm, which comes in tons of color options, can be applied to your cheeks, lips, or anywhere you want a bit of color and glow. The color is buildable, so you can get a bit of a glow, or go for more color. It’s also moisturizing. You can apply with your fingers or a brush (people rave about the Jones Road brushes), and you can use a single color or mix them together. Chrissie uses it daily on her cheeks for a super-natural little bit of color.  They last a loooooong time, and you can easily  ‘decant’ some into a little container for travel.

The Face Pencil: Chrissie LOVES this pencil and uses it daily. It’s a creamy pencil that goes on smoothly and covers any dark spots, redness, blemishes, etc., or can be used to even out skin tone.  It comes in 28 color options (!) and it’s good to have one for your ‘winter’ skintone as well as one for your potentially darker ‘summer’ skintone.

Face Shimmer Oil: Another great product, this Shimmer Oil adds some glow/shine to your face or décolletage or collarbones and looks great on a night out. This is the one product that, when Chrissie puts it on as a last step in evening makeup, she gets comments of  ‘your skin looks great’. It doesn’t look like you have a ‘shiny’ product on (it’s super sheer and you use a tiny amount), just like you have more of a glow. It’s a product you don’t know you want/need until you have it!

Sparkle Wash: This eye product gives you a bit more sparkle than the Miracle Balm or the Face Shimmer Oil and is designed to give your eyelids and browbones a bit of sparkle/highlight, without making you look ‘disco’! Chrissie often uses it when going out, putting just a tiny bit under the outer brow or on lids to lighten up the eyes. As you just need a tiny dab of it, the product lasts a really long time. But if you want just one ‘shimmering’ item, the Face Shimmer Oil has broader application uses.

Fragrance:  Chrissie has both the newer Brooklyn fragrance, as well as the Shower fragrance, and they are the only fragrances that don’t give her a headache when wearing! They both smell naturally light and fresh, with the Shower having a crisper/lighter note (neroli, orange blossom and is marketed as ‘ smells as fresh as stepping out of a shower’), and sea spray vs. the Brooklyn (lemon, neroli, and sandalwood that is marketed as ‘casual confidence’ and ‘wearing your vintage jeans’, for what that’s worth!). Shower comes in a roller ball version as well.

Hippie Stick: This is a solid moisturizer. Apply the balm anywhere on your body you want extra moisturizing, from your face and lips to your elbows or your feet! This is totally unproven, but Chrissie put it on a big post-surgery scar daily and thinks it helped with its healing, or even if it didn’t help with the healing, it felt great and smelled wonderful :).  It comes in a mini version as well, which would be good for travel and to use on your lips.

Everyday Sunscreen: This tinted 30 SPF sunscreen was just released a couple of weeks ago. We have not yet tried it, but wanted to include it because we love a good tinted moisturizer with SPF. It comes in a non-tinted version, as well as 4 color options.
