A mule is so easy—slip it on, and you’re ready to go. Plus, showing that bit of skin at the back of your foot changes the whole look of your outfit versus wearing a closed shoe, making it either more casual or just cooler, depending on the mule.
My (Chrissie) pet peeve is mules that are cut too low in front (i.e., have a low vamp), which causes the heel to lift too far off the back of the shoe when walking. I don’t want to “flap” when I walk in mules; I want to feel secure!
Mules come in various heel heights and can be slippers, sneakers, loafers, or heels, and, luckily for us, they are definitely in this year. Here are some options for everyday super casual, sneaker, and “nicer casual” looks.
Super Casual:

Birkenstock Amsterdam Suede Clog: They call it a clog, we call it a super comfy mule!

Steve Madden Fern Mule: Similar to the Birks above, but it doesn’t have the “lip” on the back, which some like and some don’t. These are SO comfy and will definitely be on my Xmas list.

Rothy’s: People really swear by these shoes for comfort. I find my foot lifts up a tiny bit higher than I like when I walk in them, but I know I’m in the minority and have included them because people really rave about them as the “house shoes” they put on the minute they walk in the door. They come in a lot of color options.
Sneakers:

Gola Shearling Lined Mule: Gola has mule options that are non-metallic and non-sheepskin lined, but why not go for it, just for fun!

Vans Super Lowpro Mule Sneakers: These aren’t the Vans we grew up with!

Quince Italian Leather Sneaker Mules: These are really comfy. The streamlined design makes them easy to wear with pants, skirts, and more. They have a bit of lift (i.e., they are not totally flat like many others), which I like. I had to size up so I wouldn’t step on the back “lip.” They also come in a fun red color.
Nicer casual:

Margaux Clara: This popular shoe comes in 8 solid colors, plus this fun zebra print option.

Vince Tevin Loafer: The ruching makes this a great everyday choice that elevates an outfit with comfort. It also comes in a shearling-lined version!

Alohas Aven Mule: Wear these as regular loafers, or push the back down and wear them as mules. This brand makes comfy shoes on demand when you order them.
Freda Salvador Ellen Mule: Made by Spanish artisans, this beauty comes in black, brown, or a ‘haircalf’ animal print.
Quince Italian Ruched Loafer Mule: This one just launched, and I haven’t tried it yet, but it’s on my list because it looks good!

Sofft Monique: Sofft shoes are really comfortable! And it’s nice that these have a bit of a heel instead of being totally flat.

Larroude Cyprus Mule: These fun moccasin mules are available for pre-order for a November delivery. The striped laces and removable “lace attachments” add interest! Multiple color options.
