Author: Chrissie Kremer

SO much good content came out in 2024. Here is a link to the 100+ shows/movies we recommended in 2024. And only the best of the best made it to our all-time favorite TV shows/series and Movies lists, divided out by category (comedy, actiabon etc). Check these lists whenever you are wondering what to watch!

Of the 100+ shows/movies we recommended this past year, here are each of our TOP choices. Overlap between the two of us is allowed!

Chrissie

In no particular order….

  • Shrinking – TV series. Apple TV: Season 2 came out this year (and Season 3 is in the works!) and my husband and I love this show! It’s funny, it’s touching, it has amazing actors and the storyline is multi-faceted. Love it.
  • Shogun – TV series. hulu:  Yes it has some grisly violence in it, but if you can get past that (just close your eyes for those parts if it bothers  you) it’s just such a sweeping, epic, beautiful show.
  • The Gentleman – TV series. Netflix: My husband and I loved this one about an upper crust Brit who finds he’s inherited his family’s country estate, which to his surprise includes an illegal weed production facility. He gets pulled into the seedy underworld of illegal drugs…and finds he’s good at it.
  • Hacks – TV series. Max: This series about a ‘has been’ comedienne in Las Vegas and her young joke writer from LA just keeps getting better and better – we’ve loved it since the start. So smartly written and well-acted.
  • Rivals – TV series. hulu. This somewhat campy ‘dramedy’ is set in the mid-80’s in the the countryside of upper crust Cotswalds, England countryside. It follows two rivals set on running the local independent tv station, as well as all their families and the local characters.
  • Bad Monkey – TV series. Apple TV. Looked forward to the new episode each week about the detective in Key West, Florida (Vince Vaughn) who needs to solve a murder to get back in good graces on the force. Portrays the book it was based on, and all the quirks of Florida ‘characters’ so well.
  • Nobody Wants This – TV series. Netflix. It was a fun binge-watch that my husband and I both enjoyed about a non-Jewish podcaster who falls for a rabbi. Can nice guys finish first?
  • The Diplomat – TV Series. Season 2.  Netflix. Kerri Russel is just so good in this one about an American ambassador to England, and her diplomat husband, who arrive on the scene as a major international incident occurs.
  • The New Look – TV series. Apple TV.  Terrific series about Coco Chanel and Christian Dior’s lives during WW2 in Paris.
  • A Gentleman in Moscow – TV series. Paramount +.  Based on the best-selling novel, the show delivers as much as the book did. Terrific acting by Ewan McGregor.
  • Slow Horses  – Season 4. TV series. Apple TV. Top 5 of everyone’s list this year! Season 4 was another winner about this group of MI5 ‘Misfits’ who are put ‘out to pasture’ for wrongdoing, yet still find themselves at the heart of a key incident in British intelligence work. Renewed for at least 2 more seasons!
  • Survivor – Reality TV series. hulu. What can I say….I’m a die-hard fan! Plus, this season all my kids got back into it again, watching with their friends, years after us watching it as a family when they were little!

In case you want to see a documentary:

  • The Greatest Night in Pop – Documentary. Netflix. This documentary is about the making of the “We Are the World’ recording. The talent in that room – amazing.
  • In Vogue: The 90’s – Mini-series. hulu. If you were alive for (and cared about) fashion in the 90’s then don’t miss this one.

Some you may not have heard of but should also check out:

  • Fisk – TV Series. Netflix. Season 3 is out now. This Australian comedy about a lawyer who is forced to take a job at a low-end local law firm after her divorce is full of great dry wit!
  • Loudermilk – TV series. Netflix. Sam Laudermilk is a recovering alcoholic and substance-abuse counselor in Seattle who is grumpy. The recovery group he leads is full of terrific characters and each episode had both comedy and drama.
  • Deadloch – TV series. Prime Video. Set in New Zealand, there appear to be more and more deaths occurring in the small town that the local law enforcer and her new partner from out of town must solve.

Joanne

Chrissie covers many of my favorites but here are a few more shows I enjoyed in 2024:

  • The Empress – TV Series. Netflix. Historical drama about Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria-Hungary and Elisabeth von Wittelsbach, Princess of Bavaria and the sister of the woman Franz is to marry. A very fun watch with a little bit of everything – history, drama, comedy, politics, costumes, etc . .
  • Jim Gaffigan: The Skinny: TV Comedy Special. hulu. Jim Gaffigan weighs in on everything from raising teenagers to appetite suppressants to computer password shaming.
  • Conclave – Movie. Theaters. The story of selecting a new Pope, with a conspiracy that could shake the very foundation of the Catholic Church. Starring Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rossellini.
  • Yellowstone – TV Series. Paramount +. Season 5. The final season of this show about a ranching family in Montana that faces off against others encroaching on their land.
  • Disclaimer – Mini-Series. Apple TV. A steamy stream with a surprising ending!
  • Dark Winds – TV Series. Netflix. Follows Leaphorn and Chee, two Navajo police officers in the 1970s Southwest that are forced to challenge their own spiritual beliefs when they search for clues in a double murder case.
  • Will and Harper – Documentary. Netflix. In this intimate portrayal of friendship, transition and America, Will Ferrell and his close friend of thirty years who recently transitioned decide to go on a cross-country road trip to explore a new chapter in their relationship. Make sure you watch to the very, very end!
  • David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived – Documentary. Hulu/Prime/Max. A coming-of-age documentary of Daniel Radcliffe and his stunt double David Holmes, whose close friendship endures a life-changing accident. I thought this would be hard to watch but it was very inspiring.
  • Palm Royale – TV series. Apple TV. An ambitious woman schemes to secure her seat at America’s most exclusive table: Palm Beach high society, circa 1969. Kristin Wiig, Ricky Martin, and Carol Burnett are amazing!
  • True Detective: Night Country – TV series. Max. Series 4. Starring Jodie Foster, this season was one of the best.
