As you know, we love to talk, plan, and shop all things travel and it seems (through a big data dive) that our travel FabLists (we have an entire section on our website dedicated to travel clothing and products!) resonate with you too. So, we’ll continue to provide travel content, this time focusing on what to pack for fall and winter travels to cooler climates. This is not geared to carry-on only, ski vacations, etc. but is simply a FabList of the go-to clothing items we tend to include when we travel this time of year. Note: we lean toward a more simple, casual wardrobe for day and night unless a special event is part of the trip!
And now for the FabList:
Pants:
Jeans:
Jeans are the mainstay of travel these days. What style of jean — skinny, boot cut, wide leg, barrel, etc. — depends on what you are comfortable in and what looks best on you. Really, anything goes. And don’t forget, white jeans aren’t just for summer anymore (we’d recommend an off-white for fall and winter).
Some jeans to consider (and you can bring a pair of black jeans or darker wash for evening) are:
-
The Rag & Bone Miramar are perfect for long flights or car rides. They look like jeans, but are made from sweat pant material with jean features (rivets, pockets) printed on the material. You have to see it to believe it. Jo has worn these on repeat over the past year and can’t stop talking about them.
-
For a wider leg with some stretch, try the Paige Anessa.
-
The Barrel Cut pant from AG is on trend and versatile.
-
For a slimmer boot-cut jean, try these from Wit & Wisdom.
Non-Jeans:
Remember, leopard is a neutral!
-
The Nili Lotan Shun pant: Our favorite right now, available in 8 colors, stylish and comfortable.
-
These silk pants from Bimba Y Lola are a great choice – loose fitting, comfy, and take up no room in a suitcase.
-
The Anthropologie Colette pant comes in a multitude of colors and fabrics, has a little stretch, and is a good comfortable non-jean option.
-
Corduroys are great for fall/winter. We love the Quince stretch wide leg crop and they also come in a straight leg.
Tops:
The key here is to dress like an onion, in layers, so you can peel off and add on depending on the weather, which is never predictable. Pack an array of blouses, tee shirts, and cashmere sweaters that can be worn separately or together.
Blouses:
-
A white blouse always looks fresh, worn alone or under a sweater. Try this perfect white blouse from Banana Republic.
-
Another blouse option is this bold stripe — good alone or under a sweater.
-
If you’re going out in the evening, it’s nice to have a dressier blouse. Some ideas include this black blouse from Veronica Beard, this floral from Alice & Olivia, or this leopard from J.Crew (also available in black or white).
- Another versatile blouse is a chambray/denim one like this one from Alex Mill. It can be worn by itself, over a white tee, or layered under a sweater.
Tees/Turtlenecks:
-
For tees, depending on the temp of your destination, we like the long sleeved cotton tees from J.Crew, their tissue turtlenecks, and the super thin, merino wool long sleeved tees with thumb holes from Cos.
Sweaters:
-
This oversized cashmere turtleneck, which can be worn alone or with the white blouse underneath.
-
You know we love Quince cashmere sweaters! Try the simple crew neck or an oversized cardigan.
-
We are also loving the oversized short sleeve cashmere sweater trend – again, wear alone or with the white blouse underneath.
-
This cashmere hoody from Me + Em is a go-to layering piece.
Dresses:
We don’t typically travel with dresses but if you must:
-
Me + Em has a travel section of outfits, including this dress.
-
This Me + Em velour a-line dress would be cute with tights and boots!
-
Brochu Walker is known for travel friendly dresses, like this one.
Other Layers:
These can be worn as outerwear or over tees, blouses, sweaters, etc. as a second layer under a warmer jacket if needed.
-
Moncler: Part sweater and part puffer. It is great on the plane and great for a top layer.
-
Herno: A FabList favorite for sure! This is worn on repeat whether at home or traveling.
Coats:
-
This coat is perfect! Light enough to wear over other layers, water resistant, and packs up small.
-
Trench coats are classic and very versatile. This one from Alex Mill is an easy throw on and we like this one from Favorite Daughter.
-
For wool coats, there is nothing like Max Mara. This short wool peacoat is stunning! Another option is this shorter coat from J.Crew.
-
For longer wool coats, this tailored gray one is sharp, as is this more oversized one.
-
And the hardest coat to find – one that’s warm and waterproof and not ugly! We like this parka from Lululemon that comes in two lengths.
Footwear:
-
Tennis shoes: A simple white leather tennis shoe like this from Veja or a retro runner like this from Loewe are good choices.
-
Loafer: A classic loafer or a driving moc, like this one from Rothy’s (available in 11 colors/patterns), are versatile.
-
Ballet Flat: Can be worn day or night. Chic picks are this square-toed one from Mansur Gavriel or these from Margaux that come in tons of color but leopard is a good choice!
- Boots: This waterproof one can be worn by day or night, and you can never go wrong with a lug sole boot like this one from Loeffler Randall.
