Seen on the Streets: The Alps, Milan & Venice

We just spent two weeks in Europe – a week hiking in the Swiss Alps followed by a road trip from Milan to Venice. Our heads were on a swivel looking at the latest fashions. From sporty chic in the Alps to high fashion on the streets of Milan, read on for the trail and street trends we noticed.

Tennies…Tennies….Tennies!

The years of watching fashionable Italian women strut down cobblestone streets in stilettos are long gone. Sneakers are everywhere and most everyone on the streets of Milan and Venice were wearing sneakers! ALL the stylish shop girls were wearing tennis shoes and the ones at Herno were wearing them with stylish, lightweight, long nylon skirts.  Adidas led the charge – tons of Sambas and Spezial – and other brands seen were Dior, New Balance, Gucci, and Balenciaga.

Loafers with Socks:

Lots of women were wearing simple black loafers with cute ankle socks, with skirts or long shorts.

Sport Sandals:

Strappy, comfy platform sandals were everywhere, in a style a bit more elevated than Tevas.

White Dresses:
It was toasty/humid during our visit and beautiful white cotton and linen dresses were out in full force, their wearers looking effortlessly chic. Here is Jo trying on a beautiful white dress at Herno. Similar ones are available stateside from Veronica Beard and Diane Von Furstenberg.

Linen:
So perfect for HOT days, loose linen was everywhere (if you missed our earlier feature on linen see it here). These loose linen shorts and shirt would be perfect for hot days.

Sleek Solids

The working women of Milan wore lots of sleek solids – think beautifully cut navy pants with a navy blouse and lovely Italian loafers or low pumps/sandals (or sneakers of course!). So chic.

Slim Cut Blue Suits on Men…With Ties

The men of Milan know how to dress no matter the heat or humidity! They wore suits of all colors, but the predominant one was a beautiful blue blazer that was slim cut coupled with ankle length, beautifully tailored slacks worn with a crisp white shirt and tie. We hadn’t seen so many men wearing neckties in years!

In the Mountains!

Outerwear is done right in the Alps of France and Switzerland! They have so many brands that we don’t have in the US, combining fashion and function effortlessly. From Chamonix to Zermatt to all the small mountain towns in between there was no shortage of outdoor gear stores… and we hit them all!! This is what stood out:

  • Some of our hiking group got terrific hiking shorts by Italian brands Karpos and Dynafit and puffers by CMP and Ortovox.
  • Chrissie’s husband LOVES his raincoat by Italian brand Salewa. They produce amazing quality great for hiking and skiing ‘weather’ needs.
  • Although Icebreaker is from New Zealand, many outdoor retailers in the Alps carry a huge array of their wonderful wool clothing.
  • The Scarpa Mojito shoe was a popular purchase!
  • Bogner had a store in Zermatt and wow, they know how to do high fashion outdoor style!

Other Outdoor gear companies:

On the Plane!

Two items of technology were seen in full force:

  • Apple Airpods Max: These ‘Over the Ear’ noise-canceling headphones were worn by three people surrounding Chrissie on the flight home. One person had a very cool little set of pink silicon covers for them (they come in over 20 colors).
  • AirFly: FabList has been a fan of this gadget for years, and on the same recent flight Chrissie saw multiple people in her row and the one in front of her using it as well. The AirFly lets you use your own wireless headphones, like the ones mentioned above, with the airplane video system, meaning you don’t have to use those poor-quality, wired headphones anymore! Everyone should have one!

Here we are spotting the latest trends in Loewe glasses :).
